Getting a good night’s sleep doesn’t just keep you from being grouchy and irritable the next morning, it’s also vital for your overall health.
After all, just a few of the health hazards that come with poor sleep include:
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
Yet, for many of us, getting those elusive eight hours isn’t just a struggle, it can seem impossible. And if you’re one of the unlucky for whom a good night’s rest is beyond challenging, those health consequences could be just around the corner.
But there is good news…
The sleep researchers at Intellibed have got your back.
In a survey of over 2,000 Americans, they have not only discovered just how many of us live with sleep issues and why, but they’ve also narrowed in on ways you can rest better – including stripping off before you hit the sheets.
The common factors behind poor quality sleep
Their poll, conducted for the National Sleep Comfort Month in November, took a deep dive into respondents’ struggles with falling asleep, as well as their nighttime habits that could have an impact on sleep quality.
And overall, those sleep scientists say that it’s not uncommon to have an issue getting the rest you need.
In fact, on average, most of us only get about six hours and 23 minutes of rest during a typical night (definitely, not that eight hours that is supposed to be our target).
And if you can fall asleep eventually, it probably takes a good 26 minutes to get there after your head hits the pillow.
So why the struggle?
Well, the Intellibed team found that the top five factors that keep us from getting our beauty sleep are:
- Worries about personal issues (45 percent)
- Being too hot (35 percent)
- Dealing with insomnia (32 percent)
- Not feeling tired (32 percent)
- Worrying about work (30 percent)
Additionally, they say that for many of us, compromising with the person we share a bed with might make getting our rest more difficult. And, you might fall into this category if you share a bed with a partner who just doesn’t care for the same type of mattress as you.
In other words, giving in on the subject might be good for your relationship, but bad for your sleep.
Getting high-quality rest
So what can help you sleep better?
Well, the team of researchers says that if you want to get a solid eight, it’s time to go naked!
They found that respondents who enjoyed sleeping naked (versus sleeping in pajamas) were more likely to report high-quality sleep at a rate of 53 percent for the bare group compared to 27 percent of those who slip between the sheets fully clothed.
And the survey also revealed that people who prefer a warm room reported better sleep than those who like sleeping in a cold room (46 percent to 23 percent).
Put simply, if you want to rest at your best, crank up the heat and take off those PJs!
