Pharmaceutical researchers are calling on the Food and Drug Administration to pull the popular decongestant phenylephrine off the market.

The reason? Because at recommended doses it is ineffective.

Phenylephrine is found in many popular over-the-counter cold and sinus medicines including Alka-Seltzer Plus®, Triaminic®, Tylenol Plus®, Dimetapp® and Sudafed®. And researchers have found that the recommended dose of 10 milligrams was no more effective than a placebo.

So the doctors and Big Pharma want to condemn you for trying an herbal, supplement or any other alternative remedy… but are just fine about you taking in copious amounts of lab-created chemicals — chock full of side effects — all the while knowing the medications they’re manufacturing are doing you absolutely no good.

Still their pockets are bulging while their wallets grow fatter.

I’m always been one to eschew the chemical “fixes” from the pharmaceuticals. Give me goldenseal, peppermint and Echinacea any day. These are natural decongestants with years and years of traditional use that says they do work. But of course Big Pharma and the FDA don’t make any money off of you when you use these.

You can also make an herbal inhalation by mixing 3 tablespoons each of peppermint, thyme and nasturtium in 2.5 pints of boiling water. Let it stand for five minutes. Then, lean your head over the bowl, cover your head and the bowl with a towel and inhale the aroma for about 10 minutes or until you feel your head and chest clearing. You can repeat it two to three times per day.
