Life exists because of a series of self-correcting chemical reactions. There is a very specific concentration of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium that must exist within and outside our cells. When the concentration of various minerals gets either too high or too low, the cells die. When too many cells die, we die.

Because of that self-correcting chemistry, we have tremendous capability to reverse the damage caused by chronic disease. This is not theoretical. I see it time and time again in my clinic.

I am a professor of medicine at the University of Iowa and see patients in a traumatic brain injury clinic and in a therapeutic lifestyle clinic that is designed specifically for patients with chronic complex and progressive diseases.

The conventional approach to the diseases we treat is to use the newest drug and latest procedures. This approach is leading to ever more money being spent on healthcare while our health as a nation continues to rapidly decline with increasing rates of obesity, dementia, autoimmunity and autism.

In our clinics we teach people that all disease begins with broken biochemistry, and for most Americans their broken biochemistry begins with a diet filled with sugar and white flour and relatively devoid of vegetables. If you eat the 150 pounds of sugar and 130 pounds of white flour that the average American eats each year, you activate disease-promoting genes. And if you eat few vegetables, you silence health-promoting genes. The result is declining health and worsening chronic disease.

I tell my patients to stop the sugar and flour-based products and instead eat three cups of green leafy vegetables (like kale, spinach, or swiss chard), sulfur-rich vegetables (like cabbage or onion family vegetables), and deeply colored vegetables (like carrots and beets) or berries. We also recommend eating seaweed and organ meats like liver, oysters and mussels.

I have seen it over and over in my clinics: When my patients drop the sugar and white flour and instead eat six to nine cups of vegetables a day, their blood pressures and blood sugars normalize, pain fades away, brain fog dissipates and mood improves.

I see people who look and feel 10 years younger than when they first came to see me. Even autoimmune symptoms fade away. Memory improves. Athletic performance improves. They begin thriving again. In short, when people adopt a diet and lifestyle designed specifically for optimal function of their cells, their health steadily improves.
